Respond exists in order to: lessen the effect of trauma and abuse on people with learning disabilities, their families and supporters.
RESPOND, a leading charity in London formed 26 years ago, works with children and adults with learning disabilities who have experienced abuse or trauma, as well as those who have abused others, through psychotherapy, advocacy, campaigning and other support. Respond also aims to prevent abuse by providing training, consultancy and research.
Respond is a specialist organisation, which operates a variety of different services such as the Survivors Service; Family Support Services; the Forced Marriage Service called ‘My Life, My Marriage’; Circles of Support and Accountability; Young People’s Service; Forensic Service; and Independent Sexual Violence Advisors. Providing psychotherapy for people with learning disabilities, advice and support for families, training for carers and professionals, and also education for people with learning disabilities. The organisation influences learning disability services to consider the psychological impact of living with learning disabilities, undertaking research and disseminating their findings. Respond accepts referrals from local authorities, various Social Services Departments and professionals across London.
